Join our team as a Mechanical Engineering Intern.
This position is HYBRID based in Plymouth and Brooklyn Park.
The Mechanical Engineer Intern will work alongside our employees to consolidate & document customer critical information, thereby improving processes related to injection molding, CNC machining, and 3D Printing to help our customers know more about the products they trust Proto Labs to manufacture. The Mechanical Engineer Intern will be exposed to our Best in Class comprehensive offering, understanding the linkage from manufacturing to customer experience.
You Will:


  • Document the history of Injection Molding Machines' installation parameters
  • Consolidate appropriate material data sheets from vendors into Proto Labs material data sheets
  • Perform a usage and sales analysis of materials used across Proto Labs fulfillment locations
  • Work to harmonize tolerancing specifications across Proto Labs fulfillment locations & websites
  • User experience, tolerance, key facet competitive benchmarking across all Proto Labs services
  • Create a catalog of manufacturing capabilities per machine per site

    You Have:

    • Possess a mechanical aptitude and a basic knowledge of manufacturing
    • Comfortable contributing to solving immediate issues
    • Successfully perform within a project framework including defined deliverables and time frames
    • Know the fundamental science and engineering principles relevant to materials
    • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment
    • Good written and oral communication skills: able to communicate complex technical information to all levels of the organization

      Education Requirements:

      • This role is for students who are pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Engineering and have ideally completed their freshman or sophomore year of college.

        Physical Demands:
        While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use a computer keyboard, monitor and mouse, telephone and printer. Stand or sit for the entire shift. Lift up to 70 pounds waist high, carry up to 70 pounds alone. Essential job duties require reaching, bending, and grasping. Able to read machine-shop gages and indicators.
        Work Environment:
        Indoors (A/C); nonsmoking; the majority of this job function is performed in a manufacturing setting requiring normal safety precautions (eye protection and hearing protection). Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
